Where Are They Now? – Hannah Jackson

What is your Doris Story?
I started working for Doris in October 2013. It was a complete change of direction in terms of my career, as I had previously been teaching English as a Foreign Language. I was looking for a role that had a more defined career path as well as job security, and knowing several people who worked in IT, it seemed like a good choice for me. My first placement was within the IT Strategy & Architecture department of a leading high street retail group based in Manchester city centre. I worked as a Strategy & Architecture Analyst, which involved ensuring architecture governance processes were maintained, fit-for-purpose and adhered to, as well as organising and facilitating team meetings, process reviews and other ad hoc admin tasks to support the team. Following this placement, and having been recommended by a member of the team I was working with who had moved to a role there, I moved to a similar position within a leading high street retail bank. This role expanded during my time here and extended to include tasks such as supporting the production of solution design templates, maintaining the department’s risk control processes, helping with demand planning and assisting with elements of project work. I worked here for a further 10 months before being offered a role within the Bank in November 2014. I have recently moved to a role as Junior Solution Architect.
What are you doing now and why?
My current role is as a Junior Solution Architect within a Bank’s Digital Programme. During my time in the Architecture Office role I was able to learn a lot about the architecture function and helped out on a number of projects, shadowing Architects and finding out more about what was involved in solutioning. I was then offered the opportunity to move into a junior role on the Digital team, developing my knowledge of solution architecture and playing an active role on projects. My role currently includes providing solution architecture support to projects, creating solution design documents, stakeholder engagement and contributing to architectural Roadmaps, Directives and Principles.
What has Doris done for you?
Doris gave me my first opportunity to get a foot in the door of the IT department of a large organisation. Without their support it would have been difficult, given my lack of IT background, to ever break into the industry. The good reputation Doris had built within the leading high street bank enabled me to be given a great chance, leading to a permanent role and hopefully the start of a long and exciting career. Secondly, Doris introduced me to a great network of people from a wide range of backgrounds who were in a similar position to myself, starting out a career in IT. Knowing others who were in my situation gave me a good support network as I got used to the new environment I was working in.
What do you associate with Doris and your career now?
I’ll always be grateful to the team at Doris for giving me my first great opportunity to get into the IT industry. Is there a memory that stands out about your time at Doris? In my first year with Doris we completed a Myers Briggs personality survey which was really insightful. This was followed up by a day-long session which provided us the opportunity to find out more about our calculated personality types and how these can be best utilised in the workplace and beyond.
