Doris’s Asda Squad – No IT Experience required to work for Doris
June 14, 2018
Hi, I’m Chris, I’ve been with Doris for 2 and half years, now on my 3rd customer assignment working at the Co-op Group as a PMO Analyst.
I wanted to share the story of how I and a few others joined Doris …
Before I joined I studied at University and for the extra money worked at Asda, where I worked for 7 years throughout my college and university days. Working across nearly every department in the store and building experience and sharpening those all-important soft skills. The great thing about working there wasn’t the 3am starts, nope certainty not, it was the number of people you come across, the chirpy regulars after a chat to the person searching for Christmas presents 5 minutes before closing on Christmas eve and of course the people that you work with.
I met Doris at a graduate fair at the University of Manchester after deciding to head down with two others in a similar position, in life and at Asda, to my own, all recently graduated and looking for the next opportunity after deciding that the green dream wasn’t for us! I left the grad fair and applied through their website a couple of days later, went through the process and that’s where it began.
Since that first meeting, the word of Doris spread down the supermarket aisles and 7 more have joined! There’s Ash and Nic at Co-op Bank, Fletch at Co-op Group, Jamie at Swinton and 2 others who are currently on the bench being interviewed for their first placements as we speak.
It just goes to show the importance of recommendations and the value it can add to a company and your back pocket of course with a helpful bonus!
Myself, along with others that joined since, have been able to share our experiences with others that we know both in and outside of the Doris world. The word of mouth can sometimes far outweigh any amount of information you read before deciding to apply. Working with people that you have known for many years has it’s advantages and helps strengthen further the environment at Doris where we can share knowledge and offer insights.
We’re now known as ‘The Asda Squad’ amongst our Doris peers and we’re working across a multitude of different areas gaining experience in testing, project management, business analysis and finance which is great if you need a little help or further information on something.
In short, recommendations have been a great tool for Doris in growing the company and for each of us in building our network and developing in the IT and business world.
Here’s to the next supermarket sweep!
